Interesting Videos

I love this effect of using many people to speak the same words, which has been used in many music clips and ads but is so effective. It is similar to a video a friend of mine made at uni, which was lots of fun making.

Em's Photo Everyday Project

 

 

I got inspiration from the different photo a day videos out there to make this video of my bedroom for a uni assignment. Took a photo of my room everyday for 2 weeks.. would love to try the face thing for a long amount of time if I had the commitment. Like this guy in Living My Life Faster. He's been taking photos of himself everyday since he was 22 (47 now so far) and aligned the eyes in After Effects.

Em's Rotoscoping

I love a-ha's 'Take On Me" film clip, using an awesome hand drawn style mixed with real action footage rotoscoping. (It won 6 awards at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.) It inspired me to make a film clip in the same style for a uni assignment. I used my step brother's song, "Staring AT You". I cut it down so it would only be about 45secs, so I didn't have as much work to do. I filmed a friend in his house acting out getting ready in the morning, etc. Then I had to rotoscope him to give him that hand drawn, drawing come to life in real footage look. Rotoscoping is drawing over footage frame by frame. So thats exactly what I had to do. I used a graphics tablet and drew over the character in each scene. I made it 12 frames per second, which means I had to draw 12 frames per second of footage. That's about 270 frames I think, because some of them where stills. I was going to have the end pictures animated as well but ran out of time. I worked on it almost 24/7 for the last week. The day before it was due I got up early and started working on it at about 9am and continuously drawing until 9am the next day (when it was due). My hand was bloody sore, it was uncomfortable to pick up a fork. The most exciting part was that the class and the lecturer loved it. And it was shown at the Multimedia screenings, which show the best of multimedia for the year.

Pixilation

Using people for stop motion (pixilation). I love the effect and really want to experiment with it.

The walk cycle in this is fantastic also the leaping and swimming/diving.. Magnificent!

Coldplay Strawberry Swing This one's walk cycle is not so realistic, however great use of standing and handstands for different angles. Swimming and being blown away is really effective too!

The PEN Story Pixilation concept with printed photographs. The camera movement even works in this syle. 60.000 pictures and developed 9.600 prints!

Human TetrisThis would be fun to try. I have also seen Space Invaders and other such games done this way.

Em's Oddball animation

This is my 2nd year animation from my Multimedia degree. I made a 3D animation bringing character into simple shapes. I think the simple story-line is very strong and works well. It was fun experimenting with how you can get different expressions and moods from simple shapes by the way they move all without facial expressions. 
I used deformer handles (lattice and nonlinear) in Maya to deform the ball with squash and stretch to animate the ball into shape. It was fun bringing the different characters into the shapes. The playful ball who is inquisitive and wants to play but is rejected and scared off and finally finds another ball to play with! The stuck up triangle who 'walks' off grumpily and the "sleeping" square who "yells" or maybe "swears" at the ball to go away. I had to make the simple shapes (without faces, arms, eyes, eyebrows to help convey meaning) look like they were sniffing, sneaking, running, stomping, thinking, jumping, snoring, yelling, poking, high-fiving, laughing.. 
I tried to get that meaning across first without the music. The music could then underscore the action. It definitely helps a lot to convey the feelings and actions of these simple shapes and adds to the understanding of the story. At first I tried sound effects, however it looked very put together, or a backing track but it needed to change with the different moods so didn't suit either. In the end I had to do it myself. With the help of Steve we sat down with the piano and worked out what sounds on the keyboard would convey sniffing, sleeping, sighing etc., which was a bit of fun. 
I'm very proud of the end result. It even got screened at the CSU multimedia screenings at the end of the year, with a selection of the best productions from the year.
